Atomic Betty

Galactic Guardian! Champion of the Cosmos! Defender of the Milky Way!

Atomic Betty is a tiny, high energy, pre-pubescant girl with two distinct identities.
Firstly, her earth self is a school girl and tomboy who continually resists her mothers attempts for fashion makeovers.

Secondly, Betty’s galactic self is a space crusader and secret heroine in Admiral DeGill’s Galactic Council, where Betty defends the universe from evil aliens at every turn. Stylistically the animations have a retro look that reminds me of The Jetsons crossed with Powerpuff Girls.

  1. Atomic Betty is pretty popular in our house - I think my kids can relate to the boredom of the class room as Betty does. Wonder if Atomic Cartoons had any probs with pitching the project ? meaning with the lead role being a girl. With the whole Geeena Davis address and See Jane research in mind - I wonder is it harder to get a projet off the ground with female lead roles?

  2. At the time the broadcasters were looking for strong female leads. Then they were back on to boys again. It’s all based on ratings and perception and can be quite cyclical. One year they want this, and the next that.

We wanted a strong female lead because it was contrarian at the time. It’ll probably go back that away eventually, but right now it seems that boy leads in action shows are the trend.

Season three comes out this fall, and we’ve made some changes that I think are quite fun. Hope you like the new look/feel!

  3. Let me add that the style hasn’t changed but there are some big changes to the series so stay tuned!

  4. It’s interesting that broadcasters needs run in cycles, as you say, based on ratings and perceptions at the time. If boy leads in action shows are the trend now - the See Jane.org could do well by doing additional reseach on female leads on TV shows.

I very much look forward to Season 3 of Atomic Betty, Rob, and see what the ” big changes to the series” are.

  5. Oh! looks like See Jane.org has done research on TV shows - Gender and Racial disparity in TV for Children titled: Now You See ‘Em, Now You Don’t. See my post here.
